This tutorial will show you how to add interactivity to an image imported into Flash. This is a very simple technique that, matched with a bit of creativity, can produce some very dynamic results. A scenery picture works well to learn the technique. You can use individual trees, mountains, or grass as individual objects from the image.
Find and import an image into Flash that contains several different objects. Select the image with your cursor. Choose the modify drop down menu and select "break apart". Choose the lasso tool and outline the objects you want to seperate from the image. When you complete a closed shape with the lasso tool, the fill inside the shape will highlight. Select the highlighted area, right click and choose "cut". Insert a new layer, right click and choose "Paste in Place". The image will appear as if it were a single image, but now you can add a layer in between the two existing layers and manipulate an object so that it appears to move behind content in the image.Insert a layer between the image layers. Create a movieclip and insert a keyframe down the timeline.Insert a keyframe on each image layer to extend each layer to match the middle layer. Individually select the middle layer keyframes and from the properties panel, choose "motion" from the "tween" option. In the last keyframe, move the movieclip to the your choosen position, allowing it to move behind the cut out content. When your finished, it should look something like the demo below
Another method for isolating objects in an image is to insert a layer above the image and use the pencil tool to outline the objects. Select the outlines, cut and paste them onto the broken apart image. You can then select the fill of those outlines in the same manner as you did the lasso tool. This can be a benefit when more precision is needed for objects in an image. You can increase the stage zoom to get precise outlines for objects in an image.
You can use this technique to add interactivity to any image.Once you understand how it works, try some different images. Groups of people isolated as seperate objects creates an interesting effect also.
