Sound On/Off in SWF

Sorry for the newbie question:

I only have a SWF file, is it possible to control the sound without having the original FLA file? I.e. with javascript from the HTML page? Or can I somehow embed the SWF into a new FLA file and control the sound that way? There's nothing complicated about the SWF file, it's just a non-interactive splash screen.
