multiple collision problem

here's the problem:
i have a movie clip, then i duplicate it 20 times. these MCs are supposed to be NPCs walking about, and I can't get them to be hard, in other words, I can't get them to not walk into one another when they meet, instead I need them just to stay still or go around each other instead of through. any help will be greatly apreciated.
