It is certainly not the only way.
There are different protection methods (http://www.dcomsoft.com/products/dcom_swf_protector.html) such as obfuscation, hiding etc, and a myriad of different programs to protect an swf
Flash is open source. This means that the code is meant to be viewable to help people learn how to use Actionscript. For as many encryption products available for Flash, there are twice as many decompilers. Encryption generally only stays about a half step ahead of the decompiler coders. Whatever particular method you employ, even if it is "new", will be accounted for in the latest release of decompilers, in effect....making your encryption obsolete within a very short time. If your looking for some good information on encryption and decryption have a read through this...
p.s.... personally, I prefer open source as it helps coders and the language grow. I post lots of code to this forum that is used by many. If every advanced coder around decided to encrypt all thier material, Flash would still be in it's infancy stages!
