Un-ordered crossfading

Let's say I have five movie clip symbols and some buttons that, when clicked, would select and display the corresponding symbol. Now, I'd like them to crossfade as they change, but they would need to do this in any order. Is there some kind of actionscript thing I can do? I know how to alpha fade things into each other, but only in a predefined linear fashion, not interactively or dynamically.
