no flash gaming forum is complete without a link to electrosever and so on:

working with XML sockets should be a game "sub-forum"
many free ones out there:

Hi,
Very true. Socket servers should be mentioned as it is the only real way to allow real time multiplayer gaming. The main one is the Flash communication server, but it is rather pricey. I have experimented with Electroserver. In fact, the guy that wrote the server part lives here in my city. I have met him a few times. The guy that writes most of the games and does the front end work for Electroserver is Jobe Makar. He has a few books out on Actionscript techniques, especially geared toward gaming.
One thing to mention, most web hosts won't support a socket server. The only one that I know of that does is...
webgamehost.com
They support Electroserver as well as a multi user server for Director. There could be more by now as it has been awhile since I had an account to experiment with Electroserver. It is free for up to 20 users, but you will have to pay if you plan on a larger community. The Cocacola website uses Electroserver. One last thing to mention, there are several free socket servers around if you dig. Colin moock release Unity open source, but like I mentioned, it is difficult to find a host willing to support a socket server.

The main one is the Flash communication server, but it is rather pricey. I would like to note that there are some services out there that host it for you and let you pay by connection. this is an affordable way to get into this. i***uxis is one, but you wil have to shop around for the best prices.

Very Cool!!!!

great point. I'd like note that i have tried webgamehost before and got zero service. They are not an option as far as i'm concerned. infact they owe me about 20 bucks. . So use them at your own risk.
(not talking to anyone specific)
The best solution out there if you want to get into remoting, xml-sockets, etc.. Is to run your own server. :( sorry.. but it's true.
get yourself a "virtual private server". They are far less expensive than a dedicated server - and you still have control of your own environment. It's advaced though but, don't be afraid - just do it.
- Don't let the hosting thing get in your way. you can also run this stuff "locally" if you need to. Find a server solution later after development. you can get this stuff to run on PC.
