Can one work on files and folders from within a flash drive?

That is, a) are they like minature hard drives where one could reorganise, rename and generally continue with projects stored on the flash drive by doing it on the flash drive itself, or b) would I have to download to PC from it, do whatever I have to do, then reload back to the flash drive?

You can work from within the flash drive. They are just like your hard drive, only portable. Make sure you save any documents before you disconnect it from you pc.
